What Is the Ketogenic Diet?
The ketogenic diet—often just called keto—is a low-carb, high-fat diet that’s designed to put your body into a state called ketosis.
How It Works:
Normally, your body uses carbohydrates (sugars) as its main source of energy. But when you eat very few carbs (typically under 50 grams a day), your body doesn’t have enough sugar to burn, so it switches to burning fat instead.
In this fat-burning state, your liver produces ketones, which become your new fuel source—especially for your brain.
What You Eat on Keto:
✅ Focus on:
- Healthy fats: avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, butter, nuts, seeds
- Protein: meat, fish, eggs, poultry
- Low-carb veggies: spinach, broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower
- Full-fat dairy (if tolerated): cheese, heavy cream
🚫 Avoid:
- Bread, pasta, rice
- Sugar (soda, candy, pastries)
- High-carb fruits (bananas, grapes, apples)
- Starchy veggies (potatoes, corn)
Benefits Some People Report:
- Fat loss
- Stable energy levels
- Fewer sugar cravings
- Mental clarity
- Better blood sugar control
But It’s Not for Everyone:
Some people feel sluggish at first (called the “keto flu”), and others find it too restrictive. It’s important to do it safely—especially if you have any health conditions.
